Local Doctor Builds Carts for Dogs

Foster dogs that might otherwise be euthanized have a new lease on life, thanks to Dr. Michael Blott’s custom carts. When the Poway chiropractor discovered the cost of commercially made carts for dogs, he decided to build them himself for a friend who was fostering two paralyzed canines. Thinking his job was done, he was surprised to receive email requests from around the world. “The foster mom had posted the story on a website for fostering groups, and the rest is history,” says Blott.

His company, Pet Ability, builds carts primarily for dogs under 15 pounds, and profits are used to donate carts to foster homes to assist with permanent placement. “Dogs make good with what they have and don’t complain,” Blott advises. “People are uncomfortable when they see handicapped dogs drag themselves and can’t imagine themselves doing that, so out of misplaced compassion, they make the choice to put the dogs down. The carts make a connection with people, confirming that the dogs just need a little help.”

Blott says finding forever homes for these dogs is now a much quicker process, and about 50 percent rehabilitate themselves to walk again without the cart.
