Natural Awakenings San Diego

August 2012 Publisher Letter

Yolo Board’s San Diego stand up paddlers

As our regular readers know each month we have an editorial theme. I normally write my letter from the publisher after layout and with associated thoughts that reflect our monthly topics. With “Healthy Families” as our August theme I found myself thinking about how much I am enjoying my daughters in their young adulthood. I always told my daughters growing up that “I am not your friend, I am your mother.”

However, as our kids grow and become adult companions, they do become our friends. So yes, I have been called on sending mixed messages from both my daughters. I tell them, smiling of course, that was then and this is now. My youngest daughter is in Switzerland working as a camp counselor for the summer. It is so much fun to listen to her childcare experiences and see all her photos. Camps can create temporary groups of family-like members and provide life-long memories.

Group activities are abundant in San Diego for all ages. Socialization and group participation is nourishing for the soul. I recently joined a San Diego meetup group for stand up paddle boarders. Not only did I meet nice people with like interests but I’m exploring new territory like I’m a San Diego tourist. We don’t have to travel far to seek fun especially in San Diego paradise. We don’t need genetic bonding to be part of a family.

Many of us have pets as our companions and they too become part of our beloved families. People and pets are one big family and so we always provide a monthly Natural Pet section in our monthly publication.

Nutrition has become at the top of importance for people and pets. It has to be. I try to deliver you all the information I can gather in a 30-day time period every month. Please note that there are always additional articles and events listed on our website that may not be in our printed magazine.

Natural Awakenings magazine is a national magazine presently publishing in 90 cities. The publishers have come together and decided to collectively invite our readers to participate in submitting art and photos for magazine covers. Look online and in our printed magazine to see how you can participate. We will be holding future contests and surveys for your participation and offering prizes to winning participants. We urge you to subscribe to our email list and join our family. If you have an iPad or iPhone you can download our Natural Awakenings national magazine. We are looking to do the same for our local magazines. Your readership and interaction brings our family of publishers together. Our community partners of readers and advertisers continued support allows us to deliver healthy products and services to our local neighborhoods. Natural Awakenings is the number one free healthy living publication in North America. We are one big healthy family.
