Stay in Balance with Acupuncture: An Interview with Carlsbad Family Acupuncture owner, Patricia Boultbee-Wingo

Nov 26, 2013 01:35PM ● By Erin Lehn Floresca

Patricia Boultbee-Wingo, owner of Carlsbad Family Acupuncture in Carlsbad, believes in integrative medicine. She uses Western medicine tests to diagnose her patients and uses Eastern medicine herbs and acupuncture to treat them. Years ago, when deciding what field of medicine to specialize in, she naturally gravitated towards acupuncture. “It’s thousands of years old and flexible enough to tailor to each individual. So many clinical trials have been done proving how much it works. Acupuncture is something I knew I could believe in,” she says. And believe in it she does. Boultbee-Wingo has witnessed acupuncture significantly improve conditions like anxiety, depression, diabetes, sports-related injuries, Parkinson’s disease and strokes, to name a few. She notes that acupuncture is also highly beneficial for cancer patients: “It helps improve a cancer patient’s quality of life by reducing chemo exhaustion, nausea and vomiting, hot flashes and edema. In fact, acupuncture can effectively reduce the side effects of many medications used for a variety of ailments.”

Prevention is Best

With healthcare reform in the forefront of our news and on many people’s minds, Boultbee-Wingo maintains that prevention is where we need to focus. “Let’s keep ourselves healthy—the best insurance is the one you don’t need to use.”

A natural-born educator, Boultbee-Wingo spends much of her time teaching her clients and the general public about the numerous ways to improve their health and well-being. She loves to share her knowledge on staying healthy, whether an informative article on boosting the immune system during the holidays, or a public speaking engagement on the benefits of acupuncture for digestive disorders. “I like to imagine that a healthy body is like a tree with strong branches. When illness begins, the symptoms show up in the branches but the imbalance is within the root,” she explains. “We can trim the unhealthy branches but they just grow back with the same problem. Address the illness at the root. Make the ‘root’ strong and the ‘branches’ grow healthy and can stay healthy.”

Help for Veterans

Boultbee-Wingo has seen acupuncture accomplish amazing things not only for pain but also for post-traumatic stress disorder. Her husband, an RN, is a prior corpsman who has seen combat and now works with veterans. Boultbee-Wingo is especially enthusiastic about providing acupuncture services for vets. “Acupuncture calms down the entire sympathetic nervous system and balances the body. Many of our veterans are unable to access that state of relaxation on their own. That’s where acupuncture comes in. What’s wonderful is that veterans can get referrals from the Veteran’s Administration to receive acupuncture treatments.”

“Once balance is restored, the body can heal itself. Our bodies are truly amazing.”

Acupuncture for Children

Boultbee-Wingo not only loves to work with adult patients, but as a mother herself she has a special fondness for working with children. “Acupuncture is basically a cradle-to-grave medicine,” she says, “and I love to see children getting the benefits of acupuncture and herbal formulas at an early age. It’s something they can use their entire lives to help maintain their well-being.” Boultbee-Wingo has helped children with a variety of conditions, including ADHD, anxiety and allergies. She is aware that some children are afraid of needles, so Carlsbad Family Acupuncture offers a needle-free system for the kids. “It’s just one of the many ways we ensure that our patients are comfortable.”

Fertility Treatments

Speaking of children, once Boultbee-Wingo realized that acupuncture has been proven to improve chances of conception after an embryo implant by as much as 40 percent, she jumped at the opportunity to help couples with fertility challenges. Carlsbad Family Acupuncture now offers a mobile acupuncturist who meets the patient at their doctor’s office and provides acupuncture immediately before and immediately after embryo transfer. “When you’re spending that much money to conceive a child, why not hedge your bet?” she says. “Acupuncture can also be beneficial for male infertility and erectile dysfunction.”

Injury Recovery and Immune Building

Acupuncture is a great complement to any surgical procedure according to Boultbee-Wingo. Both pre-operatively and post-operatively, acupuncture can help the body better prepare for the upcoming surgery and speed up recovery time. “Acupuncture can help you get back on your feet faster,” assures Boultbee-Wingo.

Carlsbad Family Acupuncture also specializes in helping their clients strengthen their immune systems. “There are so many auto-immune disorders popping up,” she says, “and it’s not surprising—many of the foods we eat contribute to leaky gut syndrome and disrupt our immune response. Since 80 percent of our immune system is located in the gut, it’s extra important to keep the digestion system healthy and happy and the immune system balanced.”

“The body doesn’t want to be sick, it wants to be well,” adds Boultbee-Wingo. “Once balance is restored, the body can heal itself. Our bodies are truly amazing.”
