Natural Awakenings San Diego

Letter from Publisher

As many of you now know, I’m currently raising my now eight-month-old granddaughter. While pureeing most of her fruits and vegetables, I’ve often wondered if I should raise a plant-based baby. After reading our feature article “Beyond Factory Homes and Gut health,” I’ve become stronger in my leanings toward feeding her a plant-based diet.
It’s hard to know sometimes what the right decision can be for another person. We all have different needs and live different lifestyles. However, there are a few things that should be the same across the board—and that is each person’s right to feel safe, valued and respected in our society.
We’ve all been warned about all the challenges in our present path. Yet, we defied the education for various reasons—politics, denial, greed, etc. In a sense, we are cursed with materialism and entitlement. I think about how the rich get richer and the poor get poorer when there are enough resources in our world that nobody ever should be starving or homeless. Pandemic subsidies are being delegated to rich corporate conglomerates while we have families in line for food starving. Why?
It’s easy to hide behind the suffering of others when we ourselves are living in a “bubble.” As we’ve all witnessed, bubbles burst. Now that our bubbles have burst wide open, how about we refill them with global education, compassion and trust? While we’re at it, let’s feed our guts with healthy food and thoughts in lieu of a mass media mob mentality.
I feel humans were given this Earth with all the beauty of nature to share and coexist in harmony and abundance for all. Instead, it’s become a bizarre jungle. I think the jungle was created for the animals to enjoy—not for us to devour. Our cement jungles have wreaked enough havoc on the world. It’s time to get back to the basics.
‘Everything happens for a reason’ feels very true in my mind. Even when the worst of the worst happens, there is a lesson to learn from and personal growth that occurs. We are repeatedly being shown that the choices we made were not good ones. How long have we been protesting racism, police brutality and yet we had to do it again to such an extreme? As the saying goes, the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. For me, it’s insane to see what is happening in the world right now.
It’s time for us all to look inward, as that is where the first change takes place. Spend time in meditation. Our third eye during mediation allows us to see the world through a global lens. Our blind eye allows us to see nothing. It’s time to be the change we want to see.
